ও চাইবে না। তুমি মনে করে দিও।

- কত হয়েছে?

- আগের মাসের বারোশো জের ছিল। এ মাসের একশো কুড়ি টাকা করে ষোলো কেজির দাম কত হয় মোবাইলে দেখে নাও।

- কি? মাসে ষোলো কেজি মাছ? এত মাছ খাচ্ছে কে? আমি তো মাছ খাই ই না!

- তোমাকে নিয়েই তো জগত নয়। আরো লোকজন আছে এ বাড়িতে। তোমার ছেলে মেয়ে কি সেদ্ধ ভাত খেয়ে বড় হচ্ছে? 

- না, মানে, কাজকম্মের বাজার ভাল না। খুব টেনশন চাদ্দিকে। একটু খরচ কমানো যায় না?

- কোন খরচ টা কমাতে চাইছ? বলো? সেটা আনা বন্ধ করে দোব। চাল? ডাল? তেল? সাবান? তোমার সিগারেট?  কোনটা বন্ধ করতে হবে বলো?

- যা ব বাব্বা! সিগারেট এর কথা আসছে কেন? আমি তো মাছ নিয়ে কথা বলছিলুম।

- ও, এত কিছু গুষ্টির জিনিসের মধ্যে শুধু মাছটাই তোমায় পথের ভিখিরি করে দিচ্ছে না? অন্যগুলো কি মাগনায় পাওয়া যায়? সকাল বেলা আমার মাথা গরম করিও না। ছেলেমেয়েকে নিয়ে পড়তে বসাও। যাও।

- সে বসাচ্ছি। কিন্তু খরচ টা যদি একটু -? 

- খরচ - খরচ করে হেচকি না তুলে ইনকাম বাড়ানোর কথা ভাবো। খরচা কমিয়ে কিছু হয় না। খরচ বাড়ার জিনিস, কমার নয়।

- সে তো বুঝলুম সখী। কিন্তু গোটা দুনিয়াই  যে ওই ধান্দাতেই সারাক্ষন ছুটছে। কিভাবে ইনকাম বাড়াবে, সেই কথাই ভাবছে। এই লক্ষ লক্ষ লোকের মাঝখান থেকে নিজের ইনকাম বাড়ানো, আর ক্ষুধার্ত বাঘের মুখ থেকে মাংস টেনে আনা একই ব্যাপার। বুঝলে?

- পরিস্কার বুঝেছি তুমি কী জিনিস।

- মানে? আমি কী?

- গতরে কুঁড়ে, ভোজনে দেড়ে, আর বচনে মারে পুড়িয়ে - পুড়িয়ে। তুমি হলে সেই জিনিস। এবার রান্নাঘরের সামনে থেকে বিদেয় হও, নাহলে আজ গেলা বন্ধ। 

বাজারে গিয়ে কান্ত দাকে মাছের টাকা দিলুম।

একগাল হেসে কান্ত দা বলল - একনো তো মাস শেস হয় নে। আরো তো মাচ যাবে। পরে দিলিই পারতে।

চমকে উঠে বল্লুম - আচ্ছা কান্তদা, সত্যি আমাদের এত মাছ লাগে? 

কান্ত একটা বিড়ি ধরাতে যাচ্ছিল। আমার কথায় গম্ভীর হয়ে গেল। 

বলল - কি বলচ দাদা? লাগে নে তো কি আমি এমনি এমনি ট্যাকা নিই? বউদি সব লিকে রাকে। আমার কাচে ওসব পাবে নে। বিশ্বেস না হলে -?  আমি তাড়াতাড়ি বাধা দিয়ে বল্লুম - আরে না না, অবিশ্বাসের কথা নয়। আসলে খরচ এত বেড়ে গেছে তাই। এই নাও, সিগ্রেট খাও।

পাছে কান্ত চটে গিয়ে বউদিকে কিছু বলে দেয় সে ভয়ে সিগারেট বের করে দিলুম।

নিজের বিড়িটা কানে গুঁজে রেখে কান্ত হাতটা কাঁধের গামছায় মুছে সিগারেট নিল।

আয়েশ করে একমুখ ধোঁয়া ছেড়ে বলল - মাচের খচ্চা তোমাদের বেশি হয় বলে বলচ? 

- হ্যাঁ, হ্যাঁ। এতক্ষনে তুমি ঠিক ধরেছ। এই তো আমাদের ছোট্ট ফ্যামিলি। আমি মাছ খাই ই না। ছেলে - মেয়েও ছোট।  তাহলে এত মাছ লাগছে কেন? বউ অবশ্য মাছ খায়।

- বউদি আর কটা খায়? আসলে খায় অন্য লোকে।

চমকে উঠলুম! 

অন্য লোকে মানে?

বউ কি মাছ রান্না করে পাড়ায় বিলোয় না কি?

তার এ গুন টা তো আমার জানা ছিল না!

আমি হাঁ করে চেয়ে আছি দেখে কান্ত একটা করূণার হাসি দিল।

তারপর লম্বা টানে সিগারেট টা প্রায় আদ্দেক করে দিয়ে বলল - এসব সিগ্রেট ফিগ্রেট আমাদের চলে নে। ভুস্কো মাল। আসল জিনিস হল গে বিড়ি। মদনের বিড়ি খেয়েচ? সে অন্য টেস। খাবে?

অন্যমনস্ক হয়ে বললুম - দিও একদিন। খেয়ে দেখব।

কান্ত হাত তুলে বাজারের কোনের দিকে একটা ছোট্ট গুমটি দেখিয়ে দিয়ে বলল - অই দোকানে পাবে। নিজে বাঁদে। আমার নাম করবে। বান্ডিলে একটাকা কম নেবে। 

- বুঝেছি। তুমি শুধু আমাকে বলো অন্য কার জন্য এত মাছ লাগে।

- বেরাল গো, বেরাল। বউদির বেরাল।

বউদির আচার, বউদির বিরিয়ানির পর এবার বউদির বেড়াল!

বললুম - তারা তো সব বাইরের বেড়াল।

কান্ত বেড়ালের মতই ফ্যাঁচ করে হেসে বলল - একন আর বাইরের নেই। সব বউদির পোসা হয়ে গেচে। ওদের জন্যোই লাগে। বুয়েচ? কটা হয়েচে একন জানো? আটটা। তার মদ্যে দুটো আচে, হেব্বি খজরা। লাইলান্টিকা ছোয় নে। আরেকটা সুদু রুই মাচের গাদা ছাড়া মুকে তুলবে নে। আবার একটা আচে, তার কাজু না মাজু কি যেন নাম? সে আবার  বউদি না খাওয়ালে খাবে নে। তাও সুদু মাচ। ভাত সে ছোঁয় নে। এসব জান তুমি? 

হতভম্ব হয়ে ভেবে দেখলুম,  সত্যি জানি না।

মিনিমিন করে বললুম - কুঁচো চিংড়ি ফিংড়ি দিয়ে ম্যানেজ করা যায় না? 

ঘ্যাক ঘ্যাক করে হেসে কান্ত বলল - কী যে বলো দাদা? ওসব তুমি খেতে পারো, ওরা কী পারে? ওদের মুকের টেস ই অন্যরকম। ওরা বউদির বেরাল। জাগগে। ওসব ভেবু নি। ভগমান তোমার ঠিক চাল্লে দেবেন। আজ কত মাচ দুব বলো? পাঁচ কেজি সিলভার কাপ দিয়ে দি?
