"লাগে টাকা দেবে গৌরী সেন" - এই কথাটা আমাদের প্রায় প্রত্যেকেরই শোনা বা পরিচিত। কিন্তু এই গৌরী সেন কে ছিলেন? কোথায় তার জন্ম হয়েছিল? গৌরী সেন এর সম্পূর্ণ নাম ছিল গৌরীশংকর সেন, পিতা ছিলেন নন্দরাম সেন। এই পরিবারের পূর্বপুরুষরা সপ্তগ্রাম এর বাসিন্দা ছিলেন। bangla golpo সপ্তগ্রাম বন্দরের অবনতি ঘটলে, তার পূর্বপুরুষরা হুগলিতে চলে আসেন। ষোড়শ শতকে গৌরী সেন জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন বর্তমান ব্যান্ডেল চার্চের কাছাকাছি বালির মোর নামক এলাকায়।
গৌরী সেনের পিতা নন্দরাম সাধারণ মধ্যবিত্ত ছিলেন এবং পুত্রের জন্য তেমন কিছু বিষয় সম্পত্তি রেখে যেতে পারেননি। গৌরি সেন সামান্য কিছু মূলধন নিয়ে তাদের পারিবারিক আমদানি-রপ্তানির ব্যবসায় প্রবৃত্ত হন। অতি সাধারণ অবস্থা থেকে নিজস্ব সততা ও তীক্ষ্ণ বুদ্ধিমত্তার সাহায্যে গৌরী সেন বিপুল সম্পদের অধিকারী হন এবং উদারভাবে দান করে বঙ্গদেশে খ্যাতি অর্জন করেন। তৎকালীন মুসলিম শাসনের সময়, Golpo গৌড়ের রাজাকে সন্তুষ্ট করে পর্তুগিজরা ব্যান্ডেলে একটি চার্চ নির্মাণের অনুমতি লাভ করে। সেই ব্যান্ডেল চার্চের প্রথম দেওয়ান ছিলেন গৌরী সেন। খ্রিস্টান সম্প্রদায়ের উপাসনার জন্য এই চার্চটি নির্মিত হয়েছিল। তাঁর মনে ঐরকম একটি হিন্দু মন্দির তৈরি করার ইচ্ছা জাগে।
তিনি মেদিনীপুরের ভৈরব চন্দ্র দত্ত নামক এক ব্যবসায়ীর সাথে ব্যবসা করতেন। সেই সূত্রে তিনি হুগলির পর্তুগীজদের থেকে পণ্যদ্রব্য কিনে মেদিনীপুর পাঠাতেন। একবার তিনি সাতটি নৌকা দস্তা বোঝাই করে মেদিনীপুর চালান দেন। মেদিনীপুরে যখন নৌকাগুলি পৌঁছায়, ভৈরব চন্দ্র দত্ত নৌকা গুলিকে রুপো বোঝাই দেখেন এবং এগুলো তার জিনিস নয় বলে আবার গৌরীসেনের কাছে ফেরত পাঠিয়ে দেন।
শোনা যায় যে, নৌকাগুলি হুগলিতে যেদিন ফেরত আসে, ঠিক তার আগের দিন রাতে, স্বয়ং মহাদেব, গৌরী সেনকে স্বপ্নাদেশ দিয়ে বলেন যে তুমি মহাদেবের মন্দির করার ইচ্ছা করেছিলে, তাই আমি তোমাকে অর্থ পাঠাচ্ছি, কাল সকালে নৌকা থেকে অর্থ গ্রহণ করে তোমার বাড়ির পশ্চিম দিকের বাগানে আমার মন্দির করে দিও। bangla golpo পরের দিন সকালে গৌরীসেন গঙ্গার তীরে গিয়ে তার সাতটি দস্তা বোঝাই করা নৌকা রুপো বোঝাই করা নৌকায় পরিণত হয়েছে দেখে আশ্চর্য হয়ে যান। ঈশ্বরের কৃপায় প্রাপ্ত এই বিপুল ধনরাশি দিয়ে তিনি গৌরীশংকর মন্দির নির্মাণ করেন।
গৌরি সেন, অমিত ধনের অধিকারী হয়েও বিনয়ী, ধীর ও সদালাপী ব্যক্তি ছিলেন। সেই সময় কোন জনহিতকর কাজ অর্থাভাবে বন্ধ হতো না। আর অর্থ সংগ্রহ না করে, কেউ কাজ আরম্ভ করতে সঙ্কোচ বোধ করত না কারণ সকলেরই দৃঢ় বিশ্বাস ছিল, " লাগে টাকা দেবে গৌরী সেন"। অনুমান করা হয় 1667 খ্রিস্টাব্দে তিনি পরলোকগমন করেন।
বড়াল লেনে এই গৌরীশংকর মন্দির বর্তমান রয়েছে। এই গৌরীশংকর মন্দিরে গতকাল আমি গিয়েছিলাম। তাঁর চিত্র আমি শেয়ার করলাম। গৌরী সেন যে বাড়িতে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন সেটি আজ ক্ষয়প্রাপ্ত হলেও, তিনি যেখানে বসবাস করতেন সেই প্রাসাদের মতো বাড়িটি আজও বর্তমান রয়েছে। কিন্তু এই সুবর্ণ বণিক সমাজ কুলের শ্রেষ্ঠ ও মহান দানবীর গৌরী সেনের স্মৃতি রক্ষার্থে হুগলিতে কোনো ব্যবস্থা আজ পর্যন্ত হয়নি। আজ বিশ্ব ঐতিহ্য দিবস (World Heritage Day)। ফেসবুকের প্রত্যেক সদস্য কে আমার আন্তরিক শুভেচ্ছা ও অভিনন্দন জানাই এবং আশা রাখি, সদস্যরা হুগলি জেলার হেরিটেজগুলির বিষয়ে আলোকপাত করবেন এবং এই জেলার মাহাত্ম্য বৃদ্ধি করবেন।

Gauri Sen, who is the owner of the immense wealth of Hooghly, has a proverb named "Laage Taka Debe Gauri Sen":-
"Laage Taka Debe Gauri Sen" - this saying is heard or known by almost everyone. But who was this Gauri Sen? Where was he born? Gauri Sen's full name was Gauri Shankar Sen, his father was Nandaram Sen. The ancestors of this family were residents of Saptagram. When the Saptagram port deteriorated, his ancestors moved to Hooghly. Gauri Sen was born in the 16th century in an area called Bali Mor near the present Bandel Church.
Gauri Sen's father Nandaram was an ordinary middle class man and could not leave much property for his son. Gauri Sen got involved in their family import-export business with a small capital. From a very humble background, with the help of his own honesty and sharp intelligence, Gauri Sen acquired immense wealth and gained fame in Bengal through his generous donations. During the then Muslim rule, the Portuguese, after pleasing the king of Gaur, obtained permission to build a church in Bandel. Gauri Sen was the first dewan of that Bandel Church. This church was built for the worship of the Christian community. He had a desire to build such a Hindu temple.
He did business with a merchant named Bhairav Chandra Dutta of Midnapore. Through that source, he used to buy goods from the Portuguese of Hooghly and send them to Midnapore. Once he sent seven boats loaded with zinc to Midnapore. When the boats reached Midnapore, Bhairav Chandra Dutta saw the boats loaded with silver and said that these were not his things and sent them back to Gauri Sen.
It is said that on the night before the boats returned to Hooghly, Mahadev himself appeared in a dream to Gauri Sen and said that you wanted to build a temple of Mahadev, so I am sending you money, tomorrow morning take the money from the boat and build my temple in the garden on the west side of your house. The next morning, Gauri Sen went to the banks of the Ganges and was surprised to see that his seven boats loaded with zinc had turned into boats loaded with silver. With this huge amount of money received by God, he built the Gauri Shankar Temple.
Gauri Sen, despite being a wealthy man, was a humble, slow and good-natured person. At that time, no charitable work was financially stopped. And without collecting money, no one hesitated to start the work because everyone had a firm belief, "Gauri Sen will give money if needed". It is estimated that he passed away in 1667 AD.
This Gaurishankar temple is present in Baral Lane. I visited this Gaurishankar temple yesterday. I shared his picture. Although the house where Gauri Sen was born is decaying today, the house like the palace where he lived is still present today. But no measures have been taken in Hooghly to preserve the memory of Gauri Sen, the best and great philanthropist of this golden merchant family. Today is World Heritage Day.
